There is now unprecedented competition for life science jobs, driven by increasing numbers of students graduating with life science degrees (4.8% year-on-year), coupled with an uptick in biotechnology and pharmaceutical layoffs (57% increase for 2023 vs. 2022). To make matters worse, job growth has slowed markedly (Down 85% for July 2023 vs. 2021 and flat since that time). 

Given these pressures, it’s important to empower Maryland’s life sciences workforce to compete effectively for key biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry jobs within our state.
